Choosing the right domain name for your project online is essential. You must choose an easy- to-remember, powerful and unique name which immediately represents the nature of your business. In your choice be careful to use the right letters and symbols to register your domain name in the easiest and quickest way possible. Here is a short list of all letters and symbols you can or cannot use in choosing the perfect name for your website.
In terms of contents, a domain name:
- Can contain only letters from "a" to "z", numbers from "0" to "9" and the dash icon. In case of domain with .EU extension the dash icon cannot be placed in first, third, fourth and last position
- Cannot contain the xn-- string in the initial four characters. This rule only applies to domains with .IT extension
In terms of length:
- Domains with extensions .IT, .US, .BIZ, .ORG and .INFO may have a minimum length of 3 characters to a max of 63
- Domains with .COM, .NET and .EU extensions must contain at least 2 characters to a max of 63
Exceptions
Currently you can register domain with accented characters only by specific request to your provider. A domain including accented characters is called IDN (Internationalized Domain Name) and it may contain one or several non ASCII characters (the ones used in latin alphabet). Some domains may include words belonging to non-latin alphabet such as Arabic, Yiddish, Chinese or Hindi.
